Last weekend I had the pleasure of being the event photographer for the first ever Brush Calligraphy workshop put on by the ladies of A Forged Affair. I was so delighted when Hannah and Rachel reached out to asked if I wanted to be the photographer and also get the perks of being an attendee!!! I could not have said YES faster! Brush calligraphy has always intrigued me, and other than taking a whole day to travel to a big city to learn, there just haven’t been any opportunities in Southwest Michigan – UNTIL NOW!
I had tried my hand at watching calligraphy Youtube videos in the past, but there is nothing like having a talented instructor in the room to answer questions, give helpful feedback and literally provide you with all the right tools. The workshop was also held at the most amazing venue in Sawyer, MI called Sojourn. This beautiful little shop off Red Arrow Highway in Harbor Country is full of vintage finds, unique designer pieces and other carefully curated artifacts – basically eye candy galore for a modernist at heart! I had such a delightful time browsing the shop, eating delicious appetizers and networking with so many other creatives!
At the end of the workshop I was shocked at how far I had progressed in my calligraphy skills – I was actually impressed with myself (granted I still have a lot to learn)!!! However, I also feel that all the credit is due to the two wonderful instructors who’s teaching methods ensured that attendees would be delighted with the results. Hannah Bunch and Rachel Gorman, owners of A Foraged Affair, have over 5 years of experience in hand-lettering and graphic design and are making it their mission to bring creative workshops to southwest Michigan. Based on the success of the first workshop, I can’t wait to see what else they have in store for the future!

I love this! I remember taking some basic calligraphy in art class in high school. I wonder if I would still be any good at it? This class looks like it would be so fun to take! Nice job!
